CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Kyouko Kasodani
AGE: Unknown
CANON: Touhou Project

CANON HISTORY: touhou wiki, SoPM article

Kyouko makes her first appearance in the franchise in the game "Ten Desires". The Myouren Temple at this point is established and has recruited their first neophyte since Byakuren and the gang busted out of Makai. Kyouko happens to be that neophyte, an orphaned youkai who fled to Gensokyo from the outside world, presumably the last of her kind (yamabiko, youkai of echoes). She is deeply grateful to Byakuren and happily performs her duties at the temple, namely the cleaning and preparing of meals all while learning and memorizing the various sutras (though she mostly just echoes them back without putting much thought to them, but she's trying!).

During Ten Desires, when the heroines show up investigating the Divine Spirit incident, tracing it to Myouren Temple, Kyouko is the first to greet them. Because this is a Touhou game, they wind up getting into a fight but Kyouko doesn't prove much of a challenge, eventually agreeing to escort the heroes to the graveyard next to the temple, which she claims has had some really strange happenings lately that might lead them to their next clue. She treats the heroines largely the same EXCEPT for Youmu, as mentioned in her personality section, whose swords scare the living bajeezus out of her.

Afterwards, during the events of Impossible Spell Card, Kyouko learns of the bounty on the outlaw youkai Seija and tries to take her down, though to no success. She is also present in one of the chapters of Wild and Horned Hermit, knocked out on accident by the "wandering mist" Suika Ibuki.

At some point, Kyouko has become bored and dissatisfied with her duties at the temple and seeks an outlet for her frustrations and other negative emotions. She winds up meeting and befriending fellow sound enthusiast Mystia Lorelei, a sparrow youkai, and they put together a punk band called Choujuu Gigaku. They perform concerts at night and are pretty popular with the younger youkai in Gensokyo. Byakuren doesn't really approve of the idea. Parents just don't understand.

CANON PERSONALITY:
"She lives in the mountains, and when she hears a joyous sound, she replies back with a loud voice. A good youkai with kind heart."

Kyouko is among a race of youkai called yamabiko which don't partake in the normal terrorizing of humans that some youkai do. In spite of her jokes about "filling the morning with their screams", Kyouko is generally nice to the heroes of the story (except for Youmu, for reasons to be described later). She is kind spirited and will try to help out anyone that needs it. It's just her way, really.

Being a neophyte of the Myouren Temple, Kyouko studies Buddhism quite extensively, and tries to reflect the principles of that faith. She can echo sutras from memory, and will often quote various sutras and precepts as the time calls for it ("Greetings are the heart's oasis.") when going about her duties. Given her primary duty is to greet temple visitors, her audio memory comes in great handy. It also helps that she's cute.

Kyouko is also very enthusiastic. It may be because she's young, but she has great energy, even for as early in the morning as her scenes in canon take place. Before dawn she is sweeping, cooking, greeting visitors, accepting challenges from interlopers, and basically preparing the whole temple before anyone else is even awake. Her energy channels into her greeting, giving a hearty "Good morning!" to the heroes, far louder than some would expect (much to Marisa's annoyance, actually). She goes about everything with this sort of gusto, and is all smiles during.

One thing she doesn't tolerate is killing. When Youmu shows up at Myouren with her swords drawn, Kyouko treats her far faaar differently than she did the other heroes. She becomes aggressive and righteous, shaming Youmu for daring to kill anyone, be they fairies or youkai. Youmu, of course, hadn't killed anyone at all, but Kyouko jumped to the conclusion anyways and attacked with a fury the other heroes were not subject to. Whether this had to do with her Buddhist training or something deeper in her past is unknown.

Kyouko, unfortunately, has become a bit bored with her life in the temple, though. While she tries her best and is dutiful, a lot of the deeper meaning of her training is lost on her and her restless youthful energy has desperately come out in other ways. She formed a rock band with Mystia Lorelei as a result and has started really throwing herself into music with a message of rebellion and punk rock culture. In some ways, it coincides with her Buddhist beliefs of challenging one's perceptions of reality. But in most ways... she's still just a kid and frustrated with the world.

Symposium of Post-Mysticism makes note to mention that she is fairly timid, but this is more to do with in-person interaction. Over great distances (such as via a typical network ala DWRP) she's fine. This also makes sense with the persona she adapts as a rock star in canon, as it's fairly detached from interpersonal communication. It's also noted in that same book that she doesn't deal with stress very well.

There is something of a depressing point to be made about the matters that drove Kyouko (and others like her) to Myouren Temple to begin with. Given it's a temple for youkai, they often take in those with nowhere left to go. Human reason and science forced Kyouko out of her home in the mountains, her entire existence threatened by the denial of the supernatural. Even with her constant smile and high energy, there is that weight still carried with her. She doesn't show it often, and prefers to not talk about it, but it's still very much reality.

It is thought, perhaps, that her darker treatment of Youmu has something to do with this. The idea of dying, of being killed or wiped out, frightens her deeply. Existence for youkai born outside of Gensokyo is extremely grim. They have no protection from xenophobic humans, who would wipe out youkai either directly or indirectly by no longer respecting their existences. Kyouko is no exception to this, as she was likely born outside Gensokyo.

She attached herself to Buddhism because she honestly had nothing left. The emptiness of secularism was frightening, threatening to pretty much unmake her. Now, with spirituality on her side, she echoes sutras in the mountains of Gensokyo, retaining her place in the way of the world as a youkai. And it scares some humans, too. That's always a nice bonus. But what she really wants is for them to believe again...

SKILLS/ABILITIES: As a Yamabiko, Kyouko has power over echoes. This means she can control soundwaves once she's heard them personally at least once. This means she can do things like change the volume of sound, imitate sounds and voices, and project soundwaves to such an intensity that they can be used as a form of self-defense. She can also create "echo chambers" that form from walls of sound, bounding soundwaves off of one another indifinitely. She mostly uses this power to memorize sutras and perform music, as well as her ever cheerful greetings of paritioners to the Myouren Temple.

♫ - oh yeah she's 100% punk rock btw, the green hair comes with the territory

♫ - she is very frustrated that her attempts at producing original music often falls flat, and she can't seem to find herself creatively as a musician, and instead only "echoes" others (D'YA GET IT? ECHO YOUKAI. CAN ONLY DO COVERS. D'YA GET IT?)
♫ - Buddhist

The Hijiri family is pretty big and has branches of its family tree in both Recolle and Japan. In general, Kyouko mostly just has distant cousins living in both places, as she was the only child of her unfortunately deceased parents. Tsuyu (who is not apping anymore, if I'm not mistaken) was the cousin she was closest to given their close age, keeping in touch via social media and e-mail for most of their time growing up. She'll be pretty upset that she can't contact her anymore (though because of the lack of app, she'll go back to being nameless).

As for her parents, the death impacted her largely in the sense that she felt a profound sense of loneliness and isolation when they died. She'd had a warm childhood up to that point, but the thing that sticks out in her memories of them the most (memories that seem to fade more and more as time passes, something that also bothers her) was that sense of being alone once they were gone, and that was probably why she attached herself to Byakuren so quickly (whom she calls 'mom', despite their actual relationship).

Her talent for music was discovered when she was in school, doing exceptionally well in elementary level music classes and showing she could quickly learn to read and understand music, as well as have perfect pitch. When she was left to her own devices at school, she could be found in the music room teaching herself to play piano. This was mostly because she had a lifelong fascination with music and sound in general. As she's gotten older, learned more instruments, honed her skills, she's also learned more and more about the science of sound, how it functions, how it can be manipulated not just through analog instruments but through digital means as well.

She collaborates often enough with other internet musicians but she hasn't quite found herself fitting into any bands or groups, partially because she has no confidence in her own songwriting and that aforementioned struggle to find her own sound. So she's more a one-woman show on her channel out of her embarrassment in her inability to actually create original music, and doesn't think anyone really would want her for a band because of it.

Kyouko became attached to punk rock when she found an old copy of The Clash's "London Calling" album in a used book store when she was young. The lettering was in her favorite colors (pink and green) and the image just struck her as fascinating. The music itself appealed to her as well, drawing on latent frustrations and anxieties in a way that made them make more sense to her. She went back to that same used bookstore and went through all their old punk records. Black Flag, The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, The Buzzcocks, Iggy Pop, Minor Threat, a ton of classic punk just kept flowing to her ears and she found it more and more appealing. She discovered a lot of more contemporary artists via the internet, and her fandom grew from there. Moreover, she loved that punks aesthetic was about a lack of polish, a lack of refinement, and instead emphasized defiance and rejection of authority.

This basically shaped who Kyouko was as a teenager. She wanted to rebel against something, though she wasn't entirely sure what that something was, but it was mostly rebelling against what she thought she SHOULD be. Byakuren, of all people, despite her polite personality and caring ways, was a huge inspiration for her. Motorcycle mechanic, boxing club, dying her hair? Her adoptive mom was more punk rock than she gave herself credit for, and maybe it was that mixed with the rest of the punk aesthetic that appealed so deeply to her.

Kyouko Hijiri is a girl in desperate search of identity and who she should be in the wake of tremendous loss and profound loneliness.

AU PERSONALITY: There aren't many major personality differences between Kyouko's OU and AU self.

She's generally more casual than her OU self, and has let her interest in punk rock seep more into her personality. She also has the ongoing frustrating of being unable to find her own unique voice in music, instead echoing others, which is not a struggle the OU Kyouko faces at all.
